I was struggling the other day with activating Windows Server 2012 R2. It kept saying the key was invalid, I know it was correct. I ended up calling Microsoft and this is what they had me do.
Sometimes you want to install programs for all users to be able to use on a Remote Desktop Session Host environment. If you are installing a program that is not installed using an MSI file, you need to run the following command before installing:
This fix applies if you are running a “quick” install of Remote Desktop Services on a single server. It will fail most of the time, unless you perform the following workaround.
At one point in time, I found myself needing to move data from one server to a new server. Often times this happens when replacing a server. So the server had about a terabyte of data on it. Pretty small, considering. But there were hundreds of thousands of files and folders.
I could just copy this data using Windows Explorer, but that isn’t as fun! I set out to build a script to copy this data and I used Windows built in utility called Robocopy.
This utility is epic. There are so many things you can do with it. I’m going to highlight just a few for you.
I thought that I would share a story today of Jedi powers. It was a long time ago, when I worked as a hardware technician at my alma mater. I loved these days, they were so simple and the work was great. I was getting paid minimal wage and enjoying learning more outside of class about my career than in class. (Except for your classes Dr. H!)
This week was half the visits that I had the week prior. This may be because the numbers were inflated with my own visits as I was building the blog. Could have also been inflated as it was brand new and the social hits were higher because of it. As things have started to steady out, the social hits have slowed down.
There are a number of things that can cause your computer to become slow. Fortunately, there is a fix for your slow computer with a simple tool. Now sometimes, there are things that slow a computer down that one tool cannot fix.
However, this tool is a great start, CCleaner offers the following features:
- Browser Clean-up
- Registry Cleaning
- Startup Optimization
- Programs Clean-up
Technology has come a long way. Dell has a feature on their PowerEdge servers called “iDRAC”. It stands for Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller. What this does, is it enables technicians remote access to the server even if the server is shutdown.
This piece of technology, like all technology, needs updating periodically. I’m going to go over how to upgrade the firmware, which is also called the Lifecycle Controller.
Today’s post is very short. I’m upgrading switches for one of our clients and as part of that, I need to ensure we capture all current configuration.
The easiest and fastest way to do that on the Dell PowerConnect 2848 Switch is to telnet into the switch using Putty. (my personal favorite terminal tools)

Sometimes the best stories happen with near death experiences…
When I was in college, I had went to my in-law’s for Thanksgiving weekend without my wife. She was on internship in Alaska and so I got to enjoy the weekend with her family and friends. At the time, her friends and I were building a world in Minecraft. This was well before the game became popular.
My friend had our world hosted on his computer and we were enjoying a night, it was the list evening there. Time flew by and before I knew it, it was 4am. I scrambled, packed up my computer and hit the road. Bad idea.
